Role

Sr Product Design

Brief

I was tasked with leading the design and development of the BukuKas Android ledger application, specifically focusing on transforming the traditional manual bookkeeping experience into a seamless digital "jot down" process. The goal was to resolve existing application bottlenecks by modernizing the bookkeeping flow for MSMEs.

Business Metrics

Retention Rate

Achieved a significant lift in user retention as the "jot down" experience became a daily habit for business owners.

Customer Engagement

Streamlined messaging led to greater daily activity within the bookkeeping modules.

Market Growth

Successfully resolved usability issues, contributing to BukuKas's position as a leading financial tool for MSMEs.

UX Metrics

Task Success Rate (TSR)

High success rate for users recording their first transaction without external guidance.

Reduced Time on Task

Optimized the bookkeeping flow, making digital entries faster than traditional manual methods.

Lower Error Rate

Data-driven design reduced common entry mistakes identified during focus group analysis.

Key Research Findings (JTBD & Consumer Insights)

The research utilized a Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) framework to understand why MSMEs (UMKMs) switch from traditional pen-and-paper to digital ledgers.

The Emotional Barrier of Accuracy

Bookkeeping is perceived as a "high-stakes" task. Users feel nervous and "fearful" of miss-entries or typos because it impacts their ability to pay employees and partners.

The "Staying Afloat" vs. "Growth" Spectrum

Most SMEs are stuck in a cycle of "staying afloat," where messy day-to-day operations (inventory, staff, payments) consume all their energy. They "hire" a bookkeeping app to move from chaos to stability.

Bookkeeping as the Strategic Bridge

Bookkeeping is the central link between staying afloat (operations) and expanding (development). 70% of its current use is for day-to-day operations, but users want it to identify growth opportunities.

Reach & Impact

The revamp of the BukuKas ledger application transformed a complex financial task into an intuitive, everyday interaction. By applying JTBD research and a Lean UX process, we successfully launched a homepage and ledger system that significantly boosted customer engagement. The initiation of the design system ensured that the product could scale efficiently, providing a professional and trustworthy bookkeeping experience for millions of users.

Lessons Learned

Solving Chaos Over Records

I learned that small business owners don't just want a record-keeper; they want to escape the "mercy of chaos" in their daily operations.

Empathy for High Stakes

I realized that bookkeeping is high-stakes because owners feel a "moral obligation" to get numbers right so they can guarantee their employees' livelihoods.

Trust Through Professionalism

This project taught me that "cartoonish" or "frivolous" design can alienate users; a serious business tool needs a mature visual identity to be taken seriously.

Actionable Insights vs. Raw Data

I learned that providing financial statements is not enough; users need a "digital financial director" that offers concise insights they can actually act on.
